Spandau Allied Prison inside and around

For those people who for the first time hear the name — the Spandau Allied Prison, I want to clarify that the name «Spandau» was given to this prison by the name of the Spandau district of Berlin, where it was located from 1881 to 1987. The word «Allied» appeared after 1947, when by decision of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, the main Nazi war criminals sentenced to various terms of imprisonment were sent to this prison and the Spandau Prison was placed under the control of four Allied states that won World War II.

The site tells about the Spandau Prison in West Berlin and the events that took place in it and around it. The site presents historical studies, photographs, numerous original documents from the archives of the Soviet Union, Great Britain, the United States.

All those interested in the history of Germany, World War II, the Nuremberg trials, the role of the Soviet Union in the epoch-making events of the post-war Europe are invited to the discussion. We will be happy to see the comments of the former employees of the Spandau Prison from the allied and non-allied staff.

Spandau Prison

Some former directors of the Spandau Prison have written articles and books over the years with their own vision of the events of those years. However, times change. I would like to hear their opinion today. Well, and, of course, a large family of servicemen of the Allied forces in Berlin, who carried guard duty in the Spandau Allied Prison, will find on the site a lot of information for the memories of the days of youth.

However, the last user of this famous institution will not be able to comment on those times. August 17, 1987 prisoner number 7 — former Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess committed suicide in the garden of the prison. But there are many secrets left. They still have to be revealed.

One of the main secrets of Spandau Prison is the suicide note of the prisoner #7. Investigation of the circumstances of the death of Rudolf Hess was conducted in 1987 by the British Royal Military Police. In 25 years, the investigation materials were declassified. As the analysis of these documents shows, in part the investigation materials have been falsified, and the document officially considered a suicide note by Rudolf Hess is not such.
